- The manuscript appears to have been created in what is now Italy.
- If the VM is the same volume as described in the Johannes Marcus Marci-Athanasius Kircher letter, it at some point ended up in Prague , in what was then Bohemia (and is now the capital of the Czech Republic ) - where it was apparently associated with Emperor Rudolf II.
Wilfrid Voynich was sometimes slightly obscure about where the VM had been acquired from - but this may have been a matter of being discrete as to who was selling things.
- Unknown date-1912 Villa Mondragone
It was then acquired by Wilfrid Voynich and was then associated with several successive owners, in the UK and the US.
- 1969-present Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library
